Walter Bricht
Chaconne for String Quartet. One of Walter Bricht’s last works, the Chaconne demonstrates a continuation of the development of his late Germanic style into more astringent and chromatic areas, though maintaining an essential tonality. It is cast in a rather extended single movement and contains a number of sections, each based on the falling chromatic motive stated at the outset of the work. This motive is developed throughout the work in highly imaginative ways, and the work concludes with a vigorous and powerful ending.
